In the Studio
Over time my work has become feminist in its inspiration. There are many issues in women's lives which have not been addressed seriously in modern sculpture. Among the most beautiful, spiritual and meaningful parts of women's lives include such things as childbirth, nursing of the child and care giving. The center of aesthetic modernism placed great emphasis on form over content. I think that art can include such content as gender and feminist issues and my art does.
I have been doing clay sculpture for many years now. My art training includes two years of study in Florence Italy; where I studied art history. In addition to my art training, I have studied ceramic engineering and have been an engineer for 22 years before returning to the arts. My unique background has given me a strong sense of aesthetics as well as a good understanding of my material. I use stoneware clay which must be fired to a high temperature and thus my figures are very durable. My work is not mass-produced with editions; each piece is unique.
I make my own glazes, which gives a unique beauty to my sculpture's surface, its texture and its color. I use simple raw materials to color the clay surface before firing.
